Celebrating the Summer Holidays in Independent Living

July 23, 2024

As we wave goodbye to the rainy weather in Potomac Falls, it's time to look ahead to summertime celebrations with family and friends. Our warm summers are perfect for outdoor entertaining, and welcoming loved ones to your Independent Living community over the holidays can be exciting. Whether you're planning an al fresco gathering with other Falcons Landing community members or need grandkid-friendly activities, our summer hosting ideas can help you create memorable events.

1. Backyard BBQ With Family and Friends

In Potomac Falls, our summertime climate is ideal for outdoor dining with loved ones. Our Independent Living cottages feature beautiful patios and decks, perfect for setting up an outdoor grill and cooking up a storm. To make summertime entertaining easier, consider asking friends and family members to bring a potluck side dish or dessert for an easy, fuss-free buffet.

Love the idea of a summer barbecue but lack a backyard? Great Falls Park is less than 30 minutes from Falcons Landing and provides grills and picnic tables for al fresco meals in breathtaking surroundings. The park also offers numerous outdoor activities to keep guests entertained, including birdwatching, boating and wheelchair-accessible platforms with views of the Potomac River.

2. Ice Cream Social

Ice cream socials are a traditional way to celebrate the summer, with records dating back to 1744 Maryland. They're also wonderfully easy to host successfully because they don't require elaborate table settings or dishes — just plenty of cooling ice cream and good company.

Letting your guests customize their ice cream is a popular option, particularly if your party includes children. Load a table with different ice creams and toppings, and invite your guests to create their own masterpieces. Ideas for toppings include:

  • Marshmallows
  • Peanut butter
  • Sprinkles
  • Fresh fruit
  • Candy
  • Cereal
  • Chopped nuts

If you'd rather skip the prep, consider inviting your friends and family on an ice cream excursion. Potomac Falls is home to numerous ice cream parlors, allowing you to enjoy all the fun of a social without the cleanup. Our community ice cream socials at Falcons Landing offer residents a fun way to spend time with friends and make new connections.

3. Hosting a Gardening Event

You don't need a huge garden to host a successful gardening event. Collaborating with other gardeners is a great way to share tips, trade materials and get help with gardening challenges. In summer, organizing an open garden day lets gardeners in your community enjoy other people's outdoor spaces and find inspiration while plants tend to look their best.

Seed swaps are also a fun way to discover new plant species. Getting together with a group of friendly gardeners to swap seeds, cuttings and other garden supplies can help you diversify the plants in your yard while saving money on store-bought items.

The areas surrounding Potomac Falls boast beautiful public gardens for outward-bound gardening socials. For example, the nearby Meadowlark Botanical Gardens feature a wealth of ornamental and native plant species, making them a perfect destination for a day trip with fellow plant lovers.

4. Hosting a Summer-Themed Craft Session

During the hottest parts of the day, summer-themed indoor activities are perfect for celebrating the season without overheating. Summer crafts make ideal gifts for loved ones, beautify your Independent Living apartment and help keep visiting grandkids occupied. Here are some of our favorite projects for crafty get-togethers:

  • Decoupage plant pots
  • Paper flower-making
  • Resin agate coasters
  • Macrame wall hangings
  • Leaf print art
  • DIY rope bags

At Falcons Landing, we offer a range of summery art classes to help you learn new techniques in a fun, friendly environment. Our Falcons Clubs also include various art groups so residents can meet regularly to knit, paint and craft together.

5. Summer-Themed Trivia Games

Summer trivia games are versatile time-fillers, ideal for livening up family gatherings and relaxed quiz nights with friends. Writing your own questions on blank index cards is a thrifty way to create your own games — consider asking each team to generate questions for their opponents so the quiz master doesn't miss out on the fun. Ideas for summer trivia questions include:

  • Historical summertime events
  • Famous beaches
  • Summer traditions around the world
  • Summer-themed movies
  • Summer world records
  • Summer songs

Alternatively, you can find plenty of premade games online. Online marketplaces, such as Etsy, often feature downloadable trivia games, allowing you to rustle up a summer activity in a hurry. News outlets are also excellent sources of online summer quizzes. For example, the CNN website often hosts a summer quiz covering blockbusters, holidays and food traditions.

6. Outdoor Exercise Class

Many people find that exercising with others helps them stay motivated and build sustainable health habits. As the weather warms up, joining an outdoor exercise class can help increase your vitamin D levels and improve your fitness in a supportive group environment. When you're hosting friends and family in your Independent Living community, consider adding an outdoor exercise class to your schedule for a fun, sociable energy boost.

The Falcons Landing health and wellness team delivers a varied schedule of indoor and outdoor fitness classes to help our residents build strength, stamina and balance. We offer programs to suit every fitness and ability level, including accessible chair yoga and aerobics classes.

While exercising outdoors is great for improving your mood, having some fun alternatives up your sleeve for the hottest days is wise. When high temperatures make outdoor exercise unsafe, water-based exercise classes let you continue your fitness progress while cooling you down. Consider joining us for an aqua aerobics class in our junior Olympic pool to develop your cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength.
